What was the inspiration for writing this book?

I view this book as a capstone to my now 50-plus years in medicine. Throughout my career, I’ve been teaching medical students, residents, practicing physicians, and the general public. Being an educator has been a significant part of my career. I considered writing a book about pulmonary medicine some years ago, but couldn’t allocate the time to do it. I was approached by a publisher and given an advance to write a book on sleep medicine more than 20 years ago, but again found that the practicalities of day-to-day solo medical practice made it impossible to accomplish. As I approached retiring I began to work on the book in 2019.

What should a reader expect to get from this book?

There are millions of people in this country alone who have concerns about their sleep: some because they can’t sleep at night, others because they can’t stay awake in the day. Others have strange things happening during their nights’ sleep that they don’t understand. These people would benefit from having a physician or friend who knows about sleep, and who can explain their sleep issues and what they can do to address them. I hope this book will be the friend who can help you, dear reader, with your sleep.

Why should I buy this book?

You may be among the millions of US adults and children who are inappropriately sleepy or who find it hard to sleep at bedtime. Or maybe you’re frightened or embarrassed by unexpected behaviors you can’t control during sleep. Unfortunately much of the practicing medical community has not yet been adequately trained to recognize or treat these problems. Sleep: A User’s Guide can help you understand why your own sleep may be less than fully satisfactory, and yet so important in your life. The book can also help you recognize when your sleep problem(s) need professional evaluation and treatment.
