Professor Adrian Williams FRCP AASM:

Over the past 60 years of my own involvement in medicine and the discipline of Sleep Medicine (including long clinical interactions with the author), the importance of sleep as one of the three pillars of health has slowly become more evident. This comprehensive book is a timely reflection, written by a passionate physician with a keen interest in sleep who explores all aspects of this essential part of our lives. From the science behind sleep to the impact of sleep on our physical and mental well-being this book tells of the fascinating world of sleep and its profound effects on our well-being. With a blend of medical expertise, personal anecdotes, and advice it provides readers with the deeper understanding of sleep that will stand them in good stead in the coming years. This is a book that is needed in all home libraries.

J. Douglas Hudson, MD (Founder, Sleep Medicine Consultants of Central Texas):

Several books have been written on the subject of sleep: some for the general public and some are mostly scientific. This book by Dr. Ken Fisher has something for everyone. The book is an easy read, is delightfully concise, and gives you the feeling that he is talking directly to you.

For those who want to learn about sleep or the lack of it, Dr. Fisher shows how our 24-hour day-and-night cycles affect every aspect of our daily life. The book provides answers to many questions frequently asked of sleep specialists, and also helps you see how much is still to be discovered.

For those wanting to know more, the book offers abundant information on the clinical, anatomic and physiologic aspects of sleep disorders. Although abnormal sleep can affect many medical problems, the subject of Sleep is covered only briefly during the training for many medical careers. This book may help fill in the gaps. The extensive reference list at the end of the book can help locate more detailed information for those who want to probe further.

David Meltzer, MD (Psychoanalyst):

Sleep: A User’s Guide is a slim but mighty volume. In a conversational style that is both easy-to-read and understandable, Dr. Fisher has given us a work that will be useful to all: young or old, man or woman, patient or professional. Dr. Fisher starts at the very beginning, since every living species needs sleep—whether plant or animal, bacterium or elite human athlete. Sleep is among the four basic drivers of human behavior: to eat, drink, reproduce and sleep. Evaluating your own sleep starts with how you feel when you wake up in the morning. If you are not satisfied with the way you feel, allow Dr. Fisher to lead you along a path that is understandable and easy to follow.

I found the final very short chapters particularly interesting and useful: “Effects of Aging on Sleep and Memory;” “Especially for Women;” and“ Sleep and the Heart.” Dr. Fisher also leads us through a review of dreaming, from the time of the Bible through modern research. Overall, reading this book will give you a better understanding of the Hows and Whys of sleep.

Adrian Baer, MA Ed. (Former High School Athletic Director):

This book is a must read for anyone who has a desire to operate at peak potential with a good quality of life. As Sleep: A User’s Guide illustrates, lack of sleep increases the brain’s tendency towards anger, and the entire body’s risk of diabetes, obesity and generally poor performance. Due to the rise in school of anger-related incidents and phone-use addiction, Sleep: A User’s Guide will be of special interest to educators, students and athletes.

Anson Levine, PhD (Jungian Psychotherapist):

An authority on his subject, Dr. H Kenneth Fisher’s Sleep: A User’s Guide is a book of exceptional quality and relevance highlighted with brief vignettes of actual patient experiences in overcoming sleep disorders. Dr. Fisher writes clearly, from two perspectives: easy-to-follow discussions of common sleep problems, and plain language explanations of fascinating research studies. Both help us understand the wide-ranging connections between our own sleep and its effect on every part of our body. Sleep: A User’s Guide is a significant resource for everyone.

William Solberg, DDS (Former Head, Orofacial Pain Section, UCLA School of Dentistry):

With Sleep: A User’s Guide, Dr. Ken Fisher takes the reader on an immersive journey into the fascinating world of slumber. As a sleep medicine specialist, he sheds light on common nocturnal disorders and offers the reader valuable insights to help understand and manage sleep concerns. Bravo, Dr. Fisher, for providing an exceptional resource for professionals and for the rest of us.
